Sayyed Ajmal Hussain
Memorial Society
Sayed Ajmal Hussain Memorial Society, named after the founder and first Managing Director of Sayyed Engineers (Private) Limited, has been working for the promotion of literature, arts and culture with a special focus on Punjab. The society has been motivated since its inception by a keen sense of responsibility to ameliorate the effects of historical neglect of the great literary tradition of Punjab. It has organized research relating to the celebrated works of our classical poets, and it continues its efforts to bring out authentic texts with responsible annotation. The works that have been published so far are as follows:
- Kafis of Bulleh Shah
- Baits of Sultan Bahu
- Saiful Maluk of Mian Muhammad Bakhsh<
All three works have been edited with comparative textual annotations and glossaries by the well known scholar of Punjabi language and literature, Mr. Muhammad Sharif Sabir. Mr. Sabir, before undertaking the above works, had earned his place in the history of Punjabi studies by his edition of "Hir of Waris Shah". He is currently working on "Sohni Mahinwal of Mian Muhammad", which the society hopes to publish. The society is also actively supporting publication of modern Punjabi works of poetry, drama and criticism. Those assisted in various ways by the society include theatre groups, painters, photographers and musicians. The society has also rendered assistance to some pioneering efforts in Punjabi journalism.
